“Untameable nature” Sculptures by Afroditi Liti in the Environment Museum of Stymphalia
29.7.2020
31.5.2021

Extension to November 29, 2021

The Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP) presents the temporary exhibition titled “AFRODITI LITI – Untameable nature”, from Wednesday 29 July, in the Environment Museum of Stymphalia, which celebrates a decade of successful operation this year.

Selected works of the famous sculptor and professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts peacefully infiltrate the permanent exhibition of the Museum and emphasize the relationship of interdependence between man and nature. Liti’s works, naturalistic or abstract, take various forms, become enlarged and mutated by a variety of materials such as metal, colourful glass tiles and mirrors. Animals, birds, insects, plants, fruit   and human figures escape from nature and invade the man-made environment of the Museum.

According to Afroditi Liti, “among the shady and illuminated sides of these unique gardens, animals, plants and humans surpass their essence and acquire mythical dimensions transformed into symbols. Two are the dominant themes in my work: nature and myth”.

Drawing inspiration from the natural environment and the subject matter of the Museum, Liti’s works remind us not only nature’s grandeur but also the need to protect it. She says: “I am now invited here, at the Environment Museum of Stymphalia, with my works in a dialogue with this mythical location which offers me in return its magic and beauty and most importantly the incentive to continue envisioning new gardens”.

Afroditi Liti was born in Athens. She studied sculpture, mosaic, fresco and icon painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1972-78), with professors Yannis Pappas, Yannis Kolefas and Konstantinos Xynopoulos. During her studies she received awards, prizes and scholarships by the State Scholarships Foundation of Greece as well as the M. Kasimatis scholarship, in 1978, for three years of graduate studies abroad. During the same year, on scholarship by the Italian State at the Università Degli Studi in Milan, she studied Italian culture. In 1983-86, on scholarship by the State Scholarships Foundation of Greece, she completed her graduate studies in the University of London. In 1985 she received the sculpture awards of the Chamber of Fine Arts in Greece. From 1978 until 2000 she worked as the resident sculptor at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Since 2000 she teaches as Professor of Sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts. Since 1978 she has exhibited her works in group and solo exhibitions in Greece and abroad.
