The Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP) is participating in the celebration of the European Artistic Craft Days (1-7 April) with the guiding theme of “The imprint of the crafts as local signatures” and, in collaboration with local craftsmen, is organising demonstrations of the traditional Tinos techniques at the Museum of Marble Crafts. More particularly:

- On Saturday 6 April (from 11am-1pm) will be introduced to “pétroma” (from pétra, meaning stone or rock), a traditional cheese of Tinos, by Eléni Vídou. A petrotíri is used to make this cheese, i.e. a utensil composed of two finely carved marble slabs. At the same time, visitors to the Museum will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the marble craftsman’s basic tools and watch a demonstration of their use by Ioánnis Hondroyiánnis. It should be recalled that Tinian marble craftsmanship, i.e. the art of quarrying and processing marble, was included on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2015.

- On Sunday 7 April (from 11am-1pm), a demonstration of the traditional art of basket weaving will be made by Loudovíkos Sigálas. Basketry is the craft of making objects by weaving wands of osier, willow, or reeds. It includes the process of gathering the raw materials, and their processing and storage in the manner developed essentially during the 19th and 20th centuries in the region of Vólax (or Vólaka). The know-how is part of the traditional handicrafts, as the weaving technique was transmitted from one generation to the other, experientially and orally, from the basket-maker to his apprentice, most commonly from father to son. Basketry, together with the particular natural landscape of Tínos’ Vólax region, defines its cultural identity, its history, its tradition and its inhabitants’ imprint on world cultural heritage. Those visiting the Museum of Marble Crafts will have the opportunity to watch a noteworthy traditional craftsman plying this unique technique.

Participation in these activities is free of charge.
